Marrant Makes Last Corner Pass To Win Modified Feature & Close Out '09 For Lakeside Speedway

Kansas City, KS - This year has been kind to Lakeside Speedway. Only 3 races were rained out in the '09 season, the weather was cool for most of that time and the racers, fans and sponsors all ventured out to their favorite local dirt track. Why shouldn't the season end on a high note? It did. A total of 99 racers checked in to do battle on a night that was predicted with cold and possible rain, but turned out to be pretty nice.

The Modified feature once again packed the most excitement for the evenings race.

Scotty Martin, fresh off his B Mod win a week ago, jumped out to the early lead after a few restarts. Holding a high line he kept the lead going throughout the race.

Another driver that was working his way to the front was Jake Richards. Richards held a 3 car battle with Darran Fuqua and Joey Selbach. After winning the war for 2nd place, Richards set his sights on Martin.

The battle wouldn't totally materialize as Richards would suffer mechanical failure and had to leave the track. If that wasn't enough, Martin, the leader, also suffered a problem at this time and drove off the track. This would hand the lead over to the 3rd place car of Selbach.

As the green flag dropped on the field Selbach was pressured by Darren Fuqua. Fuqua actually pilots a modified owned by Selbach. The two would run nose to tell with a couple laps to go when Aaron Marrant drove into the picture.

Marrant made a run on the high side of Fuqua to take the 2nd spot. He would then keep his momentum and a high line around the speedway and on the white flag lap would pull up on the back bumper of Selbach.

The two drivers made the last circuit with Selbach maintaining the lead. Coming off of turn 4, Selbach got a little loose and Marrant drove to the inside of Selbach and won the feature by the slimmest of margins.

Fuqua held on for 3rd, Austin Siebert started 19th and finished 4th and Kyle Covert finished in the 5th position.

For the 2nd straight week it was a large number of B Mods at Lakeside.

Four heats, B feature and A Main event provided the fans a chance to watch some of the areas best.

Also, for the 2nd straight week, Scotty Martin found himself at the front of the field. Over the past 2 to 3 seasons, Martin has won more B Mod features than anyone in the area.

On this night it looked as if he would repeat as the feature winner. That is until someone told Brad Smith that he should come to Lakeside and race this weekend.

Martin scooted out to the lead, but this week he had a full field of cars chasing him down. The first driver to make a run at him was Humboldt Speedway track champion, Paden Phillips.

Phillips worked his way through traffic and took over the 2nd spot. Unfortunately for Phillips, he exited turn 2 to high and knocked the rear components out of his Bills Built Modified.

Phillips left the track and this meant that Smith was going to move forward and gain some momentum. As Smith began to reel in Martin, the crowd was sensing the upcoming battle. They wouldn't be disappointed.

Martin and Smith would go side by side for a couple of laps, before Smith would dive to the inside of Martin in turn one and exit with the lead. Martin would never recover and Smith would go on to the feature win.

IMCA Northern Sport Mod National Champion, Jesse Sobbing, finished 3rd, 4th went to Bronson Combs and rounding out the top 5 was Mike Taylor.

In the Grand National division it was Gary Donaldson getting the win. Donaldson was ecstatic about the win. Over the past season Donaldson has been in a lot of tight races, but it was his arriving in victory lane that capped off his outstanding season.

The Factory Stocks were well represented on the night. Thirty-eight cars checked in to race. When it was all said and done, it was Brad Derry getting the win. By winning, Derry was the only repeat winner during the Octoberfast racing at Lakeside Speedway.

The main event looked like a carbon copy of the week before. Derry checked out on the field, but a stellar race was being turned in by a driver that started DEEP in the field, Brad Whitney.

Whitney, I-35 Speedway Stock Car driver, started in the 24th position. When the checkered flag came down, he was in 2nd place. It was one of those races that had fans cheering for Whitney, whether they wanted to or not.

JR Billings, a former Factory Stock feature winner at Lakeside, finished in the 3rd spot, 4th went to Jerry Schmidt and rounding out the top 5 was Shane Florence. A great race for Florence considering the wild tumble he had last weekend.

Saturday night's races capped the 2009 season at Lakeside Speedway. Next up for fans, racers and sponsors will be the C.A.R.B. Banquet on Dec. 5.
